Uncanny Warhol

LAVERACK spent four minutes uncanning two Campbell soup cans. This was a performance response to the academic paper ‘Uncanny’ by Sigmund Freud & ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans 1962’ by Andy Warhol.

LAVERACK displays the cans together like products in a grocery aisle. LAVERACK does not indicate how the cans should be installed. In this work, he mimicked the repetition and uniformity of advertising by carefully choosing which two cans to un-can live.

“the uncanny is something which is secretly familiar, which has undergone repression and then returned from it” – such as these select soup cans.
